Regional Centers

About Regional Centers (RC)

The IGNOU University is run through a nationwide network of 56 Regional Centers (RC), 11 Recognized Regional Centers (RRC), including 6, IGNOU-Army RRC, 4, IGNOU-Navy RRC, 1, and IGNOU-Assam Rifles RRC. The extensive network of RCs and LSCs broadens IGNOU’s reach to hitherto underserved rural, distant, socially and physically disadvantaged parts of the population, giving them flexible access to high-quality, reasonably priced higher education.

The Regional Centre is defined as follows under Section 2(J) of the IGNOU Act: “Regional Centre” implies a Center established or maintained by the University for the purpose of coordinating and supervising the work of the Study Centers in any region and for performing such other functions as may be conferred upon such Center by the Board of Management (BoM).

Moreover, the University is permitted to “confer autonomous status on a College or a Regional Center in the manner established out by the legislation” pursuant to Section 5(1)(XXVI) of the Act.

Establishment of Regional Centre

IGNOU Regional Centers are created with the support and assistance of the corresponding State Governments and are in charge of establishing, developing, maintaining, and overseeing LSCs as well as promoting the ODL system in the State/region. The delivery of programs, the organizing of staff development programs, and the provision of student support services are all responsibilities of regional centers.

Objectives of Regional Centre

Academic, administrative, and promotional operations can be generally characterized as a Regional Center’s main activities. The IGNOU Regional Centers are in charge of organizing staff development programmes in the region for training coordinators, counselors, and other functionaries. They also construct, maintain, and monitor Study Centers and Student Support Services.

For all intents and purposes, Regional Centers are the University’s subsidiary offices. They also serve as the University’s regional resource centres.
